Elizabeth’s story illuminates many issues that affect a surviving child when a sibling dies, one of them is survivor guilt, another is the grieving over a lost sibling. Parents in the throes of unresolved grief may leave a surviving child psychologically and emotionally on their own. If parents are unable to deal with their own issues, they are likely incapable of paying attention to surviving children, especially when it comes to acknowledging and dealing with a child’s grief after the loss of a sibling. In some instances, a parent may attempt to “mold” a surviving child into the child they lost. These issues unattended have the potential to drive a huge wedge in the most significant familial relationships.
